Torn between worlds
I never cared much for new year’s eve, this entire idea that there is a certain time and place in which you have to go all out and celebrate really pisses me off. So artificial and bloated and it doesn’t take into account how you might feel on that particular day. I’ve always had big issues in regards to where I would spend my new year’s eve and with whom. Since people always tend to get shitfaced beyond recognition I’d usually wind up either staying home or just hanging out with a few of my gamer friends. However this year I got lucky enough to get a killer gig In Gent. Apparently a lot of people in Belgium heard my set at Ozora and everyone loved it so much. I was really looking forward to playing some 4/4 set for a change. Even though music wise I am still listening to nu jazz and trip hop a lot more. Especially after the great gig in London.
Anyway I had a full 4 days off vacation which gave me plenty of time to check out the small city and take tons of photos. Please check them out in the photo gallery section. I also uploaded them to myspace. Around 5 years ago I booked Ott for our festival here in Croatia and I forced the poor guy to wake up at 4am to catch an early flight…something that now happened to me. Regardless of the time you save by arriving early it’s pointless since I was really tired the entire day. So as soon as I got out of the airport I met with Thomas who drove me from Brussels to Gent, had some nice food and got to see a bit of the city right away. I got to meet up with Ronald who lives in the same building as the Make up club where a party was also going down. I managed to go around town in the evening for a little bit and take some nice night shots. Afterward we went for a lovely dinner with a lot of other people and back to Ronald’s place to crash. I was in no mood to go down to the club and party, so the new years eve went pretty quiet and simple….and that was the end of all things quiet
The next day the party at the Waterfront started, I knew it was going to be hardcore, the flyer said 24 hours of music and I realized that I had to get a good breakfast and sleep properly to be able to handle it. It started off very smoothly, all the pieces fitting together. There were many people buying tickets but never really staying for too long. I guess it’s because there were many other parties going on and people were going everywhere. I never talk about my own sets so I’ll just say that I enjoyed playing for such a great crowd, being able to play any track that I really love without worrying that someone might not like it…I can’t get that here. I also didn’t know any of the DJs who played aside from Goetzlich and I really enjoyed all of them, it was top quality music all the way.
The next day I spent some time around the city again and went to the design museum. Overall it was a very lovely experience in a beautiful and cozy city that is bursting with culture and sophistication….and someone so special that I won’t talk about it just yet…I would love to write some more but the job waits for me tomorrow
Cheers to all the lovely Belgian people I met! You are fucking crazy!
