The chill gig that felt like a trance one

I’ve had my share of bizarre situations during DJ sets but the one I had last night takes the cake. Usually when I play downbeat music there’s never a swarming crowd of people, it’s just the way it is with chill out floors on trance parties and festivals. In general they are always neglected and most people just come to dance. Even most friends you talk to that say they will come and listen to you usually don’t show up. It never bothered me really nor does it offend me, I just got used to it and I always prefer to play for a smaller audience. I’ve never felt the same kind of feedback in my trance sets that I get in my chill out sets. It’s that special moment that usually happens when there are 2-3 people during your set, you begin to wonder if it’s all worth it and then one of them walks up to you, asks for the name of the track you’re playing, or just says that he/she is enjoying it. In that moment you know that there’s no bullshit behind that comment. Their opinion of your set isn’t based on anything else but their taste in music whereas on trance it can be anything from alcohol, drugs or worse, the opinion that the current DJ playing is a god no matter what he does. I’m not saying the same thing doesn’t happen on chill out but it surely happens on a less frequent basis.

What happened with the gig was a full dancefloor, on saturday night, with no room to stand and people dancing like it was a trance party. And mind you I was playing some very slow IDM stuff with an occasional funky trip here and there. As much as I liked the fact that we made a successful gathering it wasn’t exactly my idea of a good time. The whole point of a chill out gathering to me is not to create a party atmosphere but rather have a cup of chai and just relax. Then again I am sure that a lot of people sincerely enjoyed the music which is so amazing to think of because there were more people on our gathering yesterday than there are on some trance parties.

Then again who knows, maybe it has come to the point that some people really do look at the lineup, see my name and gather in greater numbers because of it, although I hate the very notion of it. I would much rather like it if they just loved the albums from Kettel as much as I do.  grin

Here I am talking a lot about music and I know the music section on my website is pretty much neglected right now. I finally sorted out my collection of music and I promise to record a new mix very soon. Also we recently moved the trancepleme.com website to the same server where this site is hosted so my older mix isn’t available right now. I promise to fix that ASAP as well as maybe upload some of my earlier trance sets here.

Kettel IS God!
but seriously, i’ve been loving Kettel since i’ve heard it on dutch radio about 10 years ago. I’ve still got taperecordings of Kettel stuff they’ve been playing late at night. Also I love your music! The outside opening set you played on Solstice festival at Ruigoord was amazing! I was running the outside bar so i didn’t get much time to dance but i consider your set among the best ever played on Ruigoord, and i’ve seen a few.
Thank you very much!
love and greetings from the Netherlands
